Pests: Wood-Boring Insects

Log houses, saunas, and other log structures are associated with warmth, coziness, and a unique microclimate. However, there are negative factors as well—wood-boring insects. These insects attack the wood from the inside, damaging the building’s structure. In Lithuania, the most commonly found species include powderpost beetles, longhorn beetles, deathwatch beetles, and others. These insects lay their eggs in cracks and small crevices. Such gaps provide a breeding environment not only for wood-boring insects but also for mould and other fungi. Insect larvae burrow deep into the wood, creating cavities that serve as cocoons. Homeowners often notice small holes made by these insects, through which adult insects eventually emerge. According to specialists, this process typically lasts about two years.

Fresh wood is especially attractive to powderpost beetles, weevils, and wood-borers. They most often infest newly cut trees. It is said that their development ends within the wood, and they do not lay eggs inside buildings—only the exit holes remain. Other pests, such as deathwatch beetles, domestic longhorn beetles, and ground beetles, attack sawn and debarked wood and can also infest dry timber. Insect pests can enter a building not only during construction but also during its use—through open windows or doors, flying in from nearby parks or forests, migrating from neighboring infested buildings, or even being brought in with firewood.

Pests can be eliminated using three methods: mechanical (cleaning), physical (using high or low temperatures, high-frequency current), and chemical (insecticides).

For log building owners—and others—it is recommended to treat the wood with antiseptics or insecticides. Modern professional chemical treatments do not affect the wood itself, do not alter paints or wood color, and pose minimal risk to health. When using any such products, it is essential to follow safety guidelines.

People also use natural remedies, such as a salt solution (half a glass of salt dissolved in 1 liter of warm water). Decoctions of ash or garlic have also been employed.
